Ok, ok so I near it all the time. āIām not motivated!ā Or āHow do you stay motivated?ā Well,Ā Motivation happens when your dopamine spikes because you anticipate something important is about to happen. Like an exam you have to pass, or that boot camp class early in the morning, etc. Hereās how it can affect your productivity levels.
The brain can be trained to feed off of bursts of dopamine sparked by rewarding experiences. You create the dopamine environment, and the brain does the rest. Ā Back to the exam example: you pass the test you were anticipating, so you reward yourself with something you like to eat or physically do something that creates joy-That will send dopamine flooding to the brain for a boost of happiness and energy or what we call motivation.Ā
One way to achieve those rewarding experiences is by setting small or incremental goals.Ā Dopamine will flow as a result of your brainās positive reinforcement every time you complete a step and meet a challenge.Ā

- Record small accomplishments. A to-do list. ThisĀ reinforces how youāre chipping away at your goals. As you feel yourself making more progress, youāll feel the greater effects of dopaminešš»
- Share results with your team. Communicating about your results (whether theyāre positive or negative) means that others will recognize your work, resulting in more positive feedback. Praising and recognizing the work of your colleagues, friends and family can spike levels of dopamineš¤
- Stay on task with micro-deadlines. Staying entirely focused on one task at a time,Ā will force you to sit down and get work done. The more you do that, the more youāll see positive feedback (via your work getting done), which will increase your dopaminešŖš»
- Focus on how great youāll feel when your project is complete.
- Multiple studies have found that motivated people to complete their work because of the sense of accomplishment they feel once projects are completed. Thatās motivation right there!
- Try out certain tools to make overwhelming tasks more doable. Whether itās an 1000 unread emails, missed communications with teammates, juggling time zones, or trying to connect with colleagues or friends, tools can help you check things off your list faster, leading to a higher flow of dopamine. Examples of tools would be better technology to store information and notes. Try an organization app, or a planner. Enroll friends and family in your timeline, so they can keep you accountable or hire someone to help you with the task at handš¤¼āāļø Motivation is different for each individual. However, once youāve found what works for you youāre closer to mastering it. You know how to bring it on when you most need it. Motivation is like a muscle, you have to work at it or you lose it š¤
